Interview with David Brufau from the Masterclass#3.

We’re glad to introduce the interview with David Brufau, a SOA student from the Masterclass#3.

Could you present yourself to our readers and tell them the position you currently hold?

Hi, my name is David, I’m 35 and I’m based in Barcelona. I’ve also studied Fine Arts and Architecture in Barcelona. I love to observe the world and ask me why things are like they are. I enjoy trying to replicate them in a cg world. That makes me understand how amazing life is. Now I’m very interested in how light works. I’m developing my own project of crafting hdri to illuminate the scenes.

Since 2010 I’m in front of dBrenders, which is my own visualisation firm that I decided to open after some years of the beginning of crisis, whichbenefits me a lot personally. If not, I would be now working inside some other Architectural firm or maybe not working in this field, who knows ..

Why have you chosen to become an Arch-Viz Artist?

Well, it is something that you don’t choose, it comes with your personality and your born skills I’m afraid. Since I was a child, I always used to use drawings more than words to understand and communicate with people; maybe there are different types of brains, mine is not so build for maths.

I always found very exciting that moment when the brain communicates with hands to express what one is thinking, or others are thinking, it’s kind of a magical moment for me, helping people represent what they have in mind is always a pleasant work.

What were the biggest difficulties you faced at the beginning of your career? How did you handle and overcome them?

Well, problems were more technically than artistry, softwares are changing  so fast nowadays so you can’t stop learning, everyday!! When I started, I spent lot of time trying to understand render engines, and also working on the more optimised workflow possible for the daily work. Being a student at State of Art helped me a lot with the technical part.

Today I’m more focus in improving at composition, color, light and shape and this kind of things, because render engines are getting so simplified with so espectacular quality results; they are near to get the golden render buzzer button!

Is there a work/ an image/ a project that you created which is most valuable to you? Why?

Yes, I have one of my very first images that I always keep close to me. It is the one that was selected to be in the Chaos Group’s gallery page, it’s kind of sentimental feeling, I guess.

I normally make my own projects on behalf to investigate one specific feature within the software: so one time are caustics, other are proxys, other reflexions, etc so each one is important for me as a learning diary and as a research project.

I tend to publish a lot of tests, people may bother that but some enjoy it while we learn together. I think it is a great thing, always to present your work to the community; we are all learning. I normally try to avoid super finish, polish,  perfect images , they don’t interest me at all: the trip is more important to me than the final destination.

What do you do in your free time after work? Can you balance your working life and your private one?

Well, sometimes your hobbies are much related with your work so I enjoy very much photography,  hand drawing, watching youtube tutorials to update and research new things. I also like very much long rides by bicycle, and  for medical prescription I have to swim 3 times a week. Private life is complicated if you don’t find the right person who can understand that freak side you need to be in.  Working life is clear once you set your own timetable: if you respect that, all is ok.

Thanks for all David and keep up the good work!
