We’re glad to introduce the interview with Pedro Silva, a SOA student from the Masterclass#10.

Could you present yourself to our readers and tell them the position you currently hold?

Hello, my name is Pedro Silva, I’m 32 and I live in Portugal. I have a degree in Architecture and I worked as an architect during 2 years before attending the SOA Masterclass#10 in 2014. In the following years, along with my partner Leandro Silva, we had the opportunity to collaborate on several projects and produce visuals for various clients around the world.

Nowadays, we’re the founders of Oxygen, a creative studio that specialises in architectural visualization.

Why have you chosen to become an Arch-Viz Artist?

Well, probably that choice unconsciously happened while I was a child and used to play a lot with LEGO. In that time, the possibility of creating almost anything from scratch was fascinating.  As I grew up, I have started developing a keen interest in Architecture, Arts, Photography and later in CGI, mainly influenced by the images of Bernard Benoit, Alex Roman and MIR.

I think that becoming an Arch-Viz Artist was something that naturally came up along these years and, besides all the daily difficulties we have to deal with, I couldn’t be happier with the decision I made, because when you really do what you like it never feels like a regular job.

What were the biggest difficulties you faced at the beginning of your career? How did you handle and overcome them?

It depends, at the beginning it’s always difficult to quickly produce outstanding visuals without passing through a continuous learning process not only technically, where you explore different tools to find what might work best for you, but also and more important, training your brain and your eye to understand basic concepts about lighting, photography or composition and then be capable to artistically put them into practice every day. What really matters is our commitment and persistence to build a good portfolio and make wise use of new opportunities as they arise.

Is there a work/ an image/ a project that you created which is most valuable to you? Why?

I can highlight two projects. The first one is Axis Viana Hotel (2014), which represents one of the most significant works we ever did and it was definitely a turning point for us, where the main idea was to share two distinct approaches: photorealistic and conceptual. More than a project, Axis Viana Hotel was a remarkable and challenging experience.

Secondly, 5th Avenue Tower (2017), our most recently skyscraper project, still in development, that revealed our new brand Oxygen and reflects a bigger, more sophisticated and mature visual production.

What do you do in your free time after work? Can you balance your working life and your private one?

I regularly practice CrossFit and occasionally I go running once a week with my partner. In my free time, I also enjoy spending time with my family and friends or watching interesting movies. It’s essential to find a good balance between work and personal life, which is not always easy to achieve, because you must be capable to disconnect from your daily routine in order to have some quality time for yourself.
